The American Association of Orthodontists puts the first orthodontic exam at age seven, and the reason is economic as much as clinical. At seven the jaws are still growing, and growth is free leverage:
- Room can be created rather than made. A narrow upper arch widened during growth may avoid extracting permanent teeth later.
